I know you are probably thinking that this sounds like the start of a typical infomercial. Let me start by shattering a few myths that are common about creativity in business:

Myth 1: Creativity has no role in business success.
A study from the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University estimates that 3 out of 4 of today’s Fortune 500 companies on the S&P 500 will no longer exist in 2027. Once upon a time, the average life span on that list was 61 years, but since 1958 we have seen the average drastically shrink. A killer of organizations is complacency. Your organization may be number one in your field now, but it will not be long before another organization figures out how to do what you do or make what you make.

They will do it better, faster, and cheaper. The organizations that survive and excel are the ones that immediately look for the next “big thing” while they are still at the peak of their current success. Because creativity is so vital to business welfare, it was identified by CEOs in a poll by Newsweek as the number one leadership competency.

Myth 2 – Creativity is only for artsy industries, such as movie production, home décor, and advertising.
Companies in all sectors from manufacturing to banking to healthcare are embracing a creative culture. Google encourages employees to take creative break and 3M allows employees a percentage of their week to work on creative ideas outside of their regular job.

Additional examples of highly successful companies because of their creativity include Amazon, SpaceX, Netflix, Instagram, Apple, Patagonia … the list goes on and on.

Myth #3 – Creativity is only applicable for product development and product issues.
If you want your company to flourish and your employees to love working for you, you need to stop solving the same problems using the same methods. Your leadership team needs to bring creative thinking into solving business process and employee problems.

Some of my favorite creativity workshops that I’ve facilitated were immediately before annual strategic meetings. I’ve even conducted creativity workshops to get employee buy-in for dramatic process changes. Part of thinking creatively is about changing your perspective and attitude. When you start asking “How can we?” to process issues and changes, company growth becomes imminent.

Myth #4 – Creativity and innovation are innate talents. Either you are born with them or you don’t
have them.
Good news, creativity and innovation can be taught, and they can be implemented in your company.
